EMERGENCY ALERT SYSTEM (EAS)
The Emergency Alert System is the third generation public alerting system, supplanting both the Conelrad system and the Emergency Broadcast System. EAS has been in use since 1997. It is designed to give the public rapid, accurate information on a variety of situations from national-level emergencies to local weather warnings to child abductions. KQAL fully participates in EAS. KQAL's EAS equipment is set to auto-forward ALL weather watches and warnings, civil emergencies, and child abduction alerts for Winona County and those counties bordering Winona County: Wabasha, Olmstead, Fillmore, Houston, Buffalo, Trempeleau, and La Crosse. All national level alerts are forwarded as well. You will also hear a weekly test and a monthly test on the first Wednesday of the month. More information on EAS can obtained at the FCC website.KQAL monitors the following sources per the Minnesota EAS Statewide Plan and the Southeastern Minnesota Regional EAS Plan:
Monitor 1: KLSE-FM, 91.7, Minnesota Public Radio, Rochester
Monitor 2: KZSE-FM, 90.7, Minnesota Public Radio, Rochester
Monitor 3: KGG-95, 162.425, NOAA weather radio, Winona
Monitor 4: WNKI-511, 155.760, Southeastern Minnesota Emergency Broadcast
